Dr. Awatef Hamed

2015 University of Cincinnati Office of the Provost Faculty Award Celebration

Congratulations to our Brian H. Rowe Professor Awatef Hamed for her recent Office of the Provost Faculty Career Award.

Awatef Hamed, PhD, joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics as associate professor in 1972. Since then, she has achieved awards for research in computational fluid dynamics, gas turbine engines and air-breathing propulsion applications for civilian and military air transport technology advancement. A fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Hamed has been keynote speaker for conferences all over the world. For contributing significantly to the aerospace engineering curriculum at UC, she was awarded the prestigious Aerospace Educator Leeland Atwood Award. She serves on two editorial boards and is active in the STEM program for recruiting women into science and engineering.

In 2014 the University named Dr. Awatef Hamed as the first Brian H. Rowe Chair in Aerospace Engineering.

"Wildfires can quickly consume large swaths of land. Currently, the most common methods for staying on top of them are to post people in lookout towers and to send manned aircraft. Researchers Manish Kumar of the University of Toledo and Kelly Cohen of the University of Cincinnati are designing unmanned mini-copters with special control algorithms and data processing capabilities to make surveying wildland fires both simple and safe."
