Vietnam - Workshops Lead to Certificate
Mousa Gargari, head of Applied Science Construction Science Department, again teamed with professor Bob Volkman to lead a workshop centered on modern construction management methods and practices for industry professionals in Vietnam. The workshop was held November 3-7 in the nation's southern city of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).
More than 100 construction industry professionals attended the workshop, which is a joint effort between Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, HUCE, and UC's Applied Science, Applied Science. These workshops offer concentrated sessions in current construction management tools, methods and practices. Running from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day these sessions provide knowledge desperately needed in a developing country in the midst of a construction boom.
Unlike regular courses at HUCE, these workshops are designed and presented to Vietnamese industry professionals. The first four days are lecture presentations covering construction documents, jobsite labor relations, subcontracting, time and cost control, computerized project administration, changes, delivery systems, quality management, scheduling and safety management, and value engineering. The final day of the workshop covered Q&A, assessment, and the distribution of the certificates of attendance.
The workshops have proven so successful that Dean Richard Newrock joined the team to lead discussions with HUCE and the Vietnamese Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Construction officials that will expand the workshops into a professional series. Construction industry personnel completing a series of the workshops will take an examination and, upon passage, earn professional certification from HUCE and Applied Science. Funding for the certificate series is being arranged through the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The workshops will return to Hanoi in April when the first of the new certificate series workshops will be delivered. Workshop content for the series is being developed by a team of Applied Science professors led by Dr. Gargari. "We are looking forward to a visit to Applied Science by Dr. Hung, President of HUCE and Professor Do Huu Thanh, Director of International Cooperation Department of HUCE to conclude arrangements for the new certificate, and other mutual initiatives," states Dr. Gargari.
Applied Science is expected to play a prominent role in training HUCE faculty and Vietnamese construction industry executives through special sessions and courses in Vietnam as well as hosting HUCE faculty at Applied Science. The program as proposed is a far reaching effort to improve professional practices of the construction industry in Vietnam.
Bob Volkman joined Applied Science Construction Science department as an adjunct professor in January 2007 with a solid record of achievement. Bob spent more than 30 years at Procter & Gamble in construction and capital projects management within the Global and Asian operations.
