Soryong (Ryan) Chae | Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering

Soryong (Ryan) Chae, PhD, is a global engineer and a new faculty member in the Department of Biomedical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering. He completed his doctorate at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), South Korea in 2004. Following his PhD, Chae was employed as a post-doctoral fellow at Hokkaido University, Japan until 2006. From 2007-2010, he worked as a research associate at the Center for the Environmental Implications of NanoTechnology (CEINT), Duke University. He then took a full-time faculty position at the University of Sydney, Australia where he remained until 2014.

Over the last ten years, Chae has authored four book chapters and 50 journal articles in water treatment using membrane science and environmental nanotechnology. He wants to make waves on water treatment around the world at UC. He has particular interests in environmental nanotechnology for the “Smart Water System”, which is a multi-disciplinary and integrated technology pursuing zero carbon footprint with energy harvesting and resource recovery from water and wastewater.
