To be appointed as an Engineer of the Month is among the highest collegiate honors in the university.  Faculty nominate juniors and seniors for one of the 12 spots based on academic standing, participation in campus activities, involvement in research, and success in students’ co-op placements.  The Engineers of the Month represent all departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Science with a commitment to excellence.

This year’s Engineers of the Month are:

Sophia Mitchell

August- Sophia Mitchell: Aerospace Engineering ACCEND Program

Sophia has researched heavily in the area of robotics programed to reason like humans.  She has spent four co-op placements with NASA Jet Propulsion (JPL) in California and hopes to work there full-time after graduation.  In addition to her internationally recognized research, Sophia has also taken initiative and started Gluten Free Bearcats after a disruptive diagnosis her early years of college.

Keith Schlater

September- Keith Schlater: Architecture Technology and Construction Management

Keith took after his older brother who attended the University and thrived in co-op placements.  As a double major, Keith has proven both hard working and dedicated.  One of his proudest moments was winning the ABC National Construction Management Competition with his team last fall.

Lauren Shultz

October- Lauren Shultz: Mechanical Engineering ACCEND Program

Lauren maintains a perfect (4.0) GPA in mechanical engineering while also in the ACCEND program- an accomplishment only few have made before.  Lauren is also an involved student, serving as two-time president of UC’s chapter of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Stephen Higgins

November- Stephen Higgins: Aerospace Engineering ACCEND Program

Stephen also maintains a 4.0 and has completed three co-op placements with Quartus Engineering Inc. in San Diego, CA. Stephens greatest academic achievement thus far was his presentation for the AY-REU program this past spring.

Rachel Schwind

December- Rachel Schwind: Mechanical Engineering

Rachel is the third Engineer of the Month who maintains a 4.0 GPA.  As a mechanical engineer, her opportunities to work in industry are endless. Rachel is also a Cincinnatus Scholarship recpient and particitpates in Engineers Without Borders.

Jeff Nainanparmpil:

January- Jeff Nainanparmpil: Computer Science

Jeff chose engineering because he loves solving problems and helping people.  He has enjoyed the universal nature of computer science and with his medical focus, he has yet to decide whether he will continue with a master’s degree, and MD, or find work in California.

Emily Condra

February- Emily Condra: Biomedical Engineering ACCEND Program

Emily is a biomedical engineering student who is also in the ACCEND program.  She maintains a 3.7 GPA, impressive for a student earning both a bachelor’s and a master’s in five years. Emily has excelled in her co-op placements at Procter and Gamble and Boston Scientific.

March- Patrick Girvin: Mechanical Engineering ACCEND Program

Patrick also maintains a high GPA of 3.8 while in mechanical engineering and the ACCEND program.  He is also a member of the UC Bearcat Marching Band, Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honor Society.

Elisabeth Martin

April- Elisabeth Martin: Civil Engineering

Elisabeth followed in her father’s footsteps who is also a civil engineer.  She looks forward to working after graduation while continuing her tradition of volunteer work for Relay for Life and Habitat for Humanity.

Jason Fischer

May- Jason Fischer: Civil Engineering

Jason has a real appreciation for sky-rise buildings which ultimately led him to study civil engineering.  His fondest academic memory at UC was traveling to Salt Lake City, Utah for the national Chi Epsilon conference and he looks forward to finding his place in the industry.

Bridget Crowley

June- Bridget Crowley: Architectural Engineering

Bridget hopes to become a structural engineer because of its numerous aspects and challenges.  She was fortunate enough to be selected to travel to Rome, Italy with 20 other students as part of a UC Honors Program.

Matthew Morgann

July- Matthew Morgann: Construction Management

Matthew has always been fascinated by construction.  One of his favorite memories at UC was last year’s CEAS Tribunal E-Week.  He enjoys the variety of construction management and says every day is different.

This year’s Engineers of the Month are as unique as the month’s they represent.  While they’re from different departments, they have one thing in common with fellow students,   faculty, and staff in claiming- WE ENGINEER BETTER™.
