SMART PATCH FOR MYELOMENINGOCELE REPAIR
Spina bifida is a devastating neural tube defect, affecting thousands of neonates annually in the United States. Myelomeningocele is the most severe type of spina bifida, emerging due to uncovered neural elements by an opening in the spine, and leading to paralysis of body parts beneath the spine by the exposure to amniotic fluid. The current research methods are not up to the mark, and need improvements on multiple fronts. Our project efforts are aimed at solving this impending problem of surgical science, using the right blend of materials science and biomedical engineering.
