Dr. Jing-Huei Lee is Professor and Graduate Program Director of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Lee’s current research interests focus on development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)/spectroscopy (MRS) methodologies and utilization of these methodologies for studying metabolism, bioenergetics and function of the brain and other organs noninvasively. He is also interested in developing advanced hardware and software for MRI applications. These include the development of active noise control for reducing acoustic noise during MRI scan as well as the development of machine learning algorithms for imaging and spectroscopic data processing and analysis.

Research and Practice Interests

I have been active in biomedical ultrasound research since 1993, and currently lead the UC Biomedical Acoustics Laboratory, investigating applications of ultrasound in thermal ablation, as well as other therapeutic and diagnostic applications. My research experience and expertise includes ultrasound image guidance for thermal ablation, passive cavitation detection and imaging, ultrasound-mediated drug delivery, therapeutic ultrasound for treatment of cancer, simulation of ultrasound propagation in inhomogeneous tissue, modeling of bio-heat transfer in thermal therapy, image analysis to map mechanical displacement and strain in soft tissues, tissue characterization, inverse scattering, modeling and analysis of radiation from ultrasound transducers, and design of minimally-invasive medical devices.

Chronic diabetic ulcers are the leading cause of non-traumatic limb amputations in the US and are a significant health care burden. To improve healing of chronic diabetic wounds, we created a unique microenvironment using a novel hydrogel (based on self-assembling peptide nanofibers) that mimics the native matrix in the wound and promotes healing. To activate unresponsive, diseased cells within the chronic wound, we have developed an electric field-based technology that uses high-frequency wireless electric fields stimulation to activate capillary cells and enhance blood vessel formation in the wound, which results in much faster healing. This technology has been successfully tested in the mouse and pig models, and is under active translational development in collaboration with UCRI and the UC Office for Entrepreneurial Affairs and Technology Commercialization.

Patient Interface for Respironics, Inc. –this project focused on the design of futuristic masks, a look into the myriad requirements for user groups to improve patient compliance.  Students presented therir work at respironics in Pittsburg and 2 patents were issued as a result of our work.

Alternative lumbar puncture –improving location for obese patients, reduce number of steps, partnering with Emergency Medicine
Central line Placement- improving ease of use while using direct visualization techniques
Single Port Laparoscopy- partnering with Dr. Prakash Gatta, utilizing articulating instruments develop a single port/trocar to accept multiple instruments through the umbilicus
Violet Beauregarde Project- partnering with EMT’s develop a method of patient transport for bariatric patients.  Current method is to use a tarp and roll patients, remove any extra hardware in ambulances and transport patients on floor of ambulance.
Emesis Suction Device-  there is currently a device to vacuum beer from an airway but not hotdogs.
Intraosseous Infusion- develop an easier, friendlier method to deliver medications IO space when IV’s prove difficult during emergency situations.  Current devices require 49lbs/avg force produced on the sternum.
Pacemaker Deactivator- for use when the patient is gone but the pace maker will not let the heart stop causing confusion in the field.
Vascular Surgery- guide wire development partnering with Dr. Joe Giglia to develop a guide wire that maintains flexibility during placement then stiffens enough to penetrate a large clot in the iliac artery.
