Why study Early Childhood Education and Development?
The Early Childhood Education and Development minor offers students the opportunity to develop an understanding of how children develop from birth to age five. Students will get an introductory experience with early child care and infant and toddler care. The minor provides students with knowledge about developmental concerns with young children and how to best work with the families of children. Students will be introduced to the concept of play as an important part of a child’s early learning and development and also learn about the basics of developing creative instructional environments for young children. The required courses provide students with a beginning overview of child development and components of early learning environments.
Admission Requirements
Successful students will have good time management skills. They will be capable of completing the required minor coursework online and on campus. Students interested in this minor have the desire to develop and broaden their knowledge about how children develop and learn in their early years.
The minor in early childhood education and development benefits careers in social work, pediatric medical fields, counseling, psychology and child life specialties.
Students from any UC program who believe that this minor will benefit them in their learning and future career are eligible to take the courses required to complete this minor.

Students will have the opportunity to observe at Arlitt Child and Family Research and Education Center.
This program is open to students enrolled in a baccalaureate program, in good academic standing with a cumulative university grade point average of 2.0 and the desire to succeed. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study. This expectation would include earning a C or higher in all minor coursework.
Interested students should meet with a UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Student Services staff member for appropriate advising. Please note: In order to obtain this certificate, 50 percent or more of the required coursework in the certificate must be taken from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, and the student must have, or be compleeting a baccalaureate at the University of Cincinnati.
