Why study Sport Administration?
The sport administration minor provides opportunities to students interested in a career in sport business who are not majoring in sport administration.
Sport is a $453 billion dollar industry. Given the economic magnitude and the pervasive nature of sport in society, the need has never been greater for education/trained sport managers. However, competition is fierce for entry level positions within sport. Those with the best education have the best opportunity to obtain a position and be successful. The sport administration minor has been designed to develop specific competencies within the field of sport management.
Admission Requirements
This program is open to students enrolled in a baccalaureate program, in good academic standing with a cumulative university grade point average of 2.0, and the desire to succeed. Although admission is open, students accepted into the program must meet the academic standards of the program to advance to upper levels of study. This expectation would include earning a C or higher in all minor coursework.
Successful sport administration graduates must have technical sport business skills as well as conceptual skills to see the big picture. Additionally, a successful sport manager must have a high level of interpersonal skills to build and maintain positive relationships with an array of constituents. Sport administrators also require excellent communication skills and the ability to lead and motivate others.
Sport management success depends upon critical thinking and creative problem solving with an emphasis on teamwork. However, the most important factor to success is a love of sports.
There are approximately five million people working in sport-related occupations. Graduates are prepared for a variety of positions in professional sports, college athletics, and high school athletic administration. Career opportunities exist within sport associations and sporting events as well as the management of sport venues. Other opportunities include the field of health and fitness, recreation, and within the sporting goods industry.
The sport administration minor is available to all matriculated baccalaureate students who are in good standing and have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Sport business competencies will be developed through the successful completion of the following courses: Introduction to Sport Administration, Ethical Issues in Sport, Sport Management, Sport Marketing and Sport Finance and Development as well as one senior level elective: Sport Facilities and Event Management, Sport Public Relations, Professional Selling in Sport or Sport Law and Governance.

Students will have the advantage of sport coursework taught by faculty who have engaged in significant research in the field of sport and also by faculty who are currently working within the sport industry.
The sport administration student group, Society of Sport Leaders, provides students with the opportunity to associate and network with fellow students interested in sports.
Students should meet with a UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Student Services staff member for appropriate advising. Please note: In order to obtain this certificate, 50 percent or more of the required coursework must be taken from the UC College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, and the student must have, or be completing a baccalaureate at the University of Cincinnati.
