Simulation and Improvement of a Flapping-Wing Micro Air Vehicle

Students will expand an existing simulation of an insect-like flapping-wing micro air vehicle.  The simulation is used to test machine-learning based controller adaptation in vehicles like that pictured below.  Depending on student preparedness and desire, one or more of the following tasks may be attempted.

  1. Improvement to the wing-force generation model
  2. Experimentation with alternative machine-learning methods for controller generation
  3. Measurement and characterization of force generation of the physical vehicle

Student will be provided with:

  1. Extensively commented and documented simulation code written in C 
  2. Basic instruction on the vehicle’s operation and control
  3. Basic instruction on one core machine learning model
  4. As available, access to the physical vehicle or data sets collected from it
