Sam Anand, PhD, professor of mechanical and materials engineering at the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), recently received the Award for Faculty Excellence. The University of Cincinnati (UC) Office of the Provost gives this award to a select number of faculty every year who demonstrate outstanding work in teaching, research, and/or service. The honor includes $2,000 in discretionary funds to support teaching or research efforts.

Anand’s contributions to the College of Engineering and Applied Science are wide ranging. Supported by the Department of Defense, General Electric, Proctor and Gamble, Honeywell and the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute, his research focuses on additive manufacturing and design engineering.

His work played a major role in the formation of the Siemens Simulation Technology Center at UC. With contributions of hundreds of millions of dollars from Siemens PLM, the center will modernize undergraduate education, exposing students to cutting-edge simulation technologies.

Anand also serves as the director of the Center for Global Design and Manufacturing. The center focuses on research, teaching, training and industry outreach in advanced manufacturing and intelligent product design. By developing new algorithms, the center provides reliable solutions to improve the efficiency of additive manufacturing processes.

In his efforts to build community, Anand advises more than 20 master’s and PhD students. He also serves on college committees for additive manufacturing; reappointment, promotion and tenure; and numerous faculty searches. Anand’s commitment to research, teaching and service has helped shape the UC community into what it is today.
