North Carolina A&T State University Performance Contract

The NCAT performance contract project includes improvements on lighting, steam system, building envelop, HVAC controls, and water meter resizing for 17 buildings. The BEAST team has effectively participated in this PC project from selecting ESCO, developing IGA and MV plan, implementation and saving calculations, and setting preventative maintenance and staff training program. The construction phase of project was completed on May 2016. To reduce the risk associated with saving estimation, BEAST modeled the buildings using energy simulation model software DOE-eQuest.

Wilkes Middle Schools Energy Assessments and Modeling

BEAST team conducted energy audits and detailed assessments for the North and West Wilkes Middle Schools to investigate the reason of energy consumption variations between the schools and to develop cost-effective energy solutions. The schools were first modeled using the whole building simulation energy software eQuest. The models were then calibrated using utility data of year 2009 and tested on other utility data covering four years. The calibrated models produce accurate energy estimations and the error is less than 5% as shown in Figure 3. The models were used to investigate many energy conservation measures, particularly the applications of CO2- based demand-controlled ventilation DCV along with the economizer for air source heat pumps in schools, investigates their impact on the annual energy consumption, and determines the potential savings achieved in different USA locations as showing in figure below. The results show that by implementing the DCV integrated with the economizer, a significant energy savings can be achieved. This saving varies according to the locations and actual occupancy profile drifted form the design occupancy.

Developing of Utility Card Report

In effort to develop web-based Energy Information System and Utility Report Cards (URC) for school administrators and facility managers in central Florida, multivariate regression modeling techniques have been developed new for schools and integrated into the URC. To provide a comprehensive comparison of energy use on month by month basis, factors that affect the variation of energy consumption is considered such as weather conditions, scheduling, system upgrade and changes, number of occupant, and etc. the models were tested on more than 562 schools in central Florida.

Guilford County Schools

Many energy audits for GCS and many energy low cost energy efficiency measures are implemented. Figure 5 shows district elementary schools EUI comparison. Dr. Nassif, Mr. Tesiero, and Ms. Graydon (GCS energy engineer) published the works in ASHRAE conference.

Energy Services for Government Buildings in Florida

BEAST team performed energy assessments on several government buildings in Florida for the City of Satellite Beach, City of Sarasota, City of Altamonte Springs, etc. The energy assessment reports can found online at FSEC website. Several energy conservation measures were developed and implemented to the cities and a significant amount of savings was achieved. For example, by improving the ice thermal storage control strategy for one building of the City of Satellite Beach, more than 40% energy cost savings from total central plant operation cost are achieved. The work was published in ASHRAE transactions.

Applied Materials

Continuous commissioning and optimization was applied on two buildings of Applied Materials, Ca. Ten energy conservation measures for each building were proposed and implemented. The actual savings achieved exceed the savings initially proposed. 7,0421,356 kWh annual saving was achieved; the project payback is less than one year with utility company incentives. The energy conservation measures ECM implementation and M&V for the Applied Materials project was completed by 2010 but additional tuning and following up was completed by 2013.
