The Big Idea (global relevance)

Many companies try to determine the cheapest way to package their materials to make shipping cheaper.  Some products need to be able to hold the same amount of materials but be small enough to fit on store shelves without extra space. The idea of this unit is to give the students a problem and they have to come up with a way to maximize the space by trying to save the company money by making the storage box take up less room.

Essential Questions
  1. What types of things do companies need to consider when making a cereal box?
  2. What all goes into creating storage boxes for products?
The Challenge

Students will design and construct a cereal box that will hold the same amount of cereal(have the same volume) but it needs to take up less room(smaller surface area) than the cereal box I bring in.

Food engineering, concerns food processing, food machinery, packaging, ingredient manufacturing, instrumentation, and control.

Engineering Design

Students will design and construct a cereal box that has the same volume but a smaller surface area than the box I bring in.

Students will then need to create another cereal box that is cylindrical.  It must have the same volume as the previous box.

Unit Academic Standards

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, volume and surface area of two- and three-dimensional objects composed of triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, cubes, and right prisms.

How to Make This a Hierarchical Unit

Students in the 8th grade could use this unit to figure out how many cereal boxes can fit inside of a shipping box.  Also they could use this unit to maximize the number of cereal boxes and shipping boxes that can fit iinside a truck to ship these items.
