Dr. Ghia joined UC in 1969 at the then College of Engineering in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics and has had a long and distinguished academic and research career. He is the first UC faculty member to earn all three major UC Faculty awards during his tenure here – the Rieveschl Award, the George B. Barbour Award for Superior Student-Faculty Relations, and the Mrs. A.B. “Dolly” Cohen Award for Excellence in Teaching. He and his wife, Dr. Urmila Ghia who teaches in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, embrace their students like family and believe in going to amazing lengths to help willing students to learn.
“There’s a joy you see in students’ eyes and faces when they grasp something they did not know. When a student asks a question that requires critical thinking of the material you’ve taught, that’s a great moment and that’s when you start to learn back from the students.” Dr. Karman Ghia, 2004
The Professor Kirti “Karman” Ghia Endowed Graduate Student Assistance Fund has been established by his family in honor of Professor Ghia’s extraordinary commitment to his students over nearly five decades of teaching and mentoring. This fund will provide two awards annually of direct financial support for international students pursuing full-time graduate studies in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.
