Engineering & Computing Education

The Department of Engineering and Computing Education supports engineering students in succeeding across both undergraduate and graduate programs. Through a modular first-year engineering program that emphasizes student choice, flexible graduate degree options, research opportunities at all levels, and comprehensive academic support, our faculty help students develop into well-rounded engineers and educators.

Graduate Programs

PhD and MS

For students interested in combining engineering and education — and becoming interdisciplinary engineers who bridge these fields across different contexts — the department offers the following graduate degrees:

These programs prepare graduates for careers in industry, government and education.

Graduate Level Microcredentials

For current students in the college who are interested in teaching engineering, pursuing training-focused roles in industry, or engaging in education-adjacent careers, the department also offers short-form credentials that can be completed in a single semester:

  • Microcredential in Teaching Engineering
  • Microcredential in Engineering Education Research

Undergraduate Programs

Pre-Engineering Program

Rather than start in a specific program like mechanical or chemical engineering, the Pre- Engineering Program gives students the flexibility to decide what they want to study later on in their college experience. After a semester or two at UC’s College of Engineering and Applied Science, Pre-Engineering students apply to transition to a major of their choice, a process based on their UC GPA and the courses they have taken.

Undergraduate Research Opportunities

While the department does not currently offer a formal undergraduate degree in Engineering Education, there are multiple opportunities for undergraduate involvement.

Faculty support both:

  • Paid research experiences
  • Course-based research experiences

These opportunities allow students to engage directly in engineering education research and practice.

Learning Center

The Alumni Engineering Learning Center, located on the 8th floor of Rhodes Hall, serves as an academic home for students in the College of Engineering and Applied Science, with a strong emphasis on the first-year experience.

Doctoral student exploring first-year engineering experience

June 15, 2026

At the College of Engineering and Applied Science, undergraduate students take a series of first-year foundational and design thinking engineering courses (ENED) to set them up for success in their program. For Madeline Martin, aerospace engineering '24, these courses left a lasting impact. With a passion for teaching and experience as a teaching assistant, Martin chose to pursue a doctoral degree in engineering education at UC. She was recently named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month.

Engineering professors studying how co-op impacts student journey

January 5, 2026

Cedrick Kwuimy, associate professor educator in the Department of Engineering and Computing Education at the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Science is studying how a student’s first co-op experience impacts the remainder of their journey as an engineering student, and how educators can better prepare them for these experiences. Kwuimy and his collaborators have received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support this research.
