Cooperative Education

What is co-op?

At the University of Cincinnati, we believe that learning is doing and doing is learning. Our curriculum is built around co-op - it’s part of our DNA. Which only makes sense, since we invented cooperative education back in 1906. Ranked No. 1 in the nation among public universities by U.S. News & World Report. UC’s co-op program promotes paid on-the-job experience that fosters professional maturity and increases career options following graduation. Gain real-world experience while collecting a real-world paycheck.

  • Where will you co-op?: From Tesla and Toyota to Apple and Microsoft, UC has partnerships with more than 600 businesses, industries, research organizations, and governmental agencies located around the world.
  • Student co-op stories: Discover what co-op has to offer you, directly from our students.
  • Co-op Frequently Asked Questions: Answers to questions we often hear from students.
  • International Co-op: Learn while discovering the world through the international co-op program.

  • CEAS reviews applications holistically. We consider academic success (grades and classes), extra-curricular activities, letter of recommendation(s), and essay(s).
  • We require students who are applying to CEAS to have 3 credits of Science (with Chemistry and Physics included) and 4 credits of Math (with Pre-Calculus included at a minimum). Engineering Technology programs may have flexibility with admissions requirements.
  • The University of Cincinnati is test optional for students applying to CEAS for the incoming Fall 2024 class. Please visit UC Admissions Test Optional page for more information.

Yes, CEAS is a direct admit college! You’re admitted to our College of Engineering & Applied Science rather than a pre-major program. This means that you can apply directly to a program of choice, and if you’re admitted, you’ll begin your college career in that specific program.

Please take a look at these websites which will help you to determine which credit will transfer and compare it to your CEAS program’s curriculum:

  • Apply directly to one of our undergraduate degree programs
  • Visit our Choose Your Major page
  • Start planning now to accelerate your degree via ACCEND to earn a bachelor's and a master's degree. You will have the opportunity to apply for ACCEND at the end of your first year.

Our engineering technology programs are the reason we have “Applied Science” in our college name! Engineering at UC is focused on theory and design, whereas engineering technology specializes in application and implementation. Our engineering programs curricula include higher-level math and theoretical science and our engineering technology program puts greater emphasis on hands-on lab skills. Both programs are 5-year bachelor programs which include 5 semesters of co-op.
